(Reuters) – The Obama administration is expected to announce by Wednesday its updated plan for oil and natural gas drilling in U.S. waters, including whether to allow exploration for the first time along the U.S. East Coast.
The plan could pave the way for a significant new domestic source of energy, helping to reduce U.S. dependence on oil imports and boost supplies of natural gas used to displace coal in power plants as the country works to reduce emissions of climate-changing greenhouse gases.
Last month, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said he wanted to release the updated drilling plan by the end of March.
Two industry sources said on Monday President Barack Obama was expected to give a speech about energy security on Wednesday, which could include his views on expansion of offshore drilling.

But Obama, who wants Congress to move a stalled climate change bill, has sought to reach out to Republicans by signaling he is open to allowing offshore drilling, providing coastlines are protected.
The U.S. Geological Survey estimates the U.S. Atlantic coast waters may hold 37 trillion cubic feet of gas and nearly 4 billion barrels of oil, while the Pacific Coast has 10.5 billion barrels of oil and 18 trillion cubic feet of gas.
To put that in context, the United States imports about 2 billion barrels of oil a year from OPEC nations and is expected to import 2.7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas from all sources this year, according to the Energy Department.

It was painful watching him in those videos. It was that kind of stupid rhetoric and clownishness that got him elected. Now we are having to fight to get out from under the mess he has made.
Whatever reason he has for this change in strategy about offshore drilling it is because of pressure or something that will benefit him. The campaign is in full swing. Oh wait, it has never stopped being in full swing. It seems like I have been watching that man campaign for half of my life and I’m sick of it! Let’s put him in jail so we don’t have to be tortured any more.

He is not making peace with republicans, just stealing their thunder. One of Palin’s most popular ideas with the right was off shore drilling.
Seems the behind the scene players are changing their plans and moving different chess pieces.
Bone thrown to the Rep. I”ll trade you off shore drilling for amnesty, they have to come up with jobs for all the illegals somehow. You did not think this was to put Americans to work did you.

Drilling does not mean we get to use the energy. We have capped wells off the coast of CA and in AK ( http://www.reformation.org/energy-non-crisis.html ). If we want more oil/gas all we have to do is put a pipeline in and turn them on. This is more smoke an mirrors.

Hmmmmmm, possibly another resource for payment of our unsustainable mounting debt and loans from China and Japan….sorry, I lost my head, could Obama actually be bright enough to look long range since China’s been gobbling up resouces around the globe? Whatever the motivation this would be the first thing he did for the benefit of America…..ah, not likely.

Ah remember when it just seems like recent history that O was against off shore drilling, I do not know how much that affected Florida going blue in the last election but I guess those who voted for him because of this issue just got a ride under that famous bus.
China will be drilling soon outside our 12 mile limit on our continental shelf. There is nothing to stop China/whoever from drilling in the Gulf (outside our 12 mile limit).

The US has a 200 mile exclusive economic zone that prohibits any foreign nation from drilling for oil within that 200 mile limit.

Sarah Palin tells the crowds in Nev. last week that O was not acting like a Commander in Chief and he flies off to Afgh. When she tells crowds we need to drill here, he makes a pathetic pitch to explore for oil. We know there is oil off the coast. Start drilling and uncap the wells that are there already..Go Sarah !!Tell it like it is! It is time for her to uncover who this bozo really is. I think she knows.
