Make sure that you aren't just checking the box for Independent if there is a NO Party box there. I am glad to hear the site isn't freezing anymore. I believe some of the widgets were causing the problems and I am weeding through them to see which ones were the culprit. It it starts to freeze again - make sure to let me know so I can correct it as soon as possible.
