1918 Spanish Flu vs. Mexican Flu: Part 2

(Author’s Note: the post that follows is not the initial Part 2 of this series, but I felt this information should jump the line so to speak.  For an excellent interactive current map of the pandemic, go here. For Part 1 of this series, go here.  One more note, my continued research is absolutely chilling…)

Please meet John M. Barry, researcher and author of “The Great Influenza: The story of the deadliest pandemic in history”, who is in high demand right now during the current pandemic circling the world.  Mr. Barry wrote a newspaper piece that was published on April 28th, 2009 and I wanted to include this piece before you watch the following video shot at MIT back in October, 2007.  My initial research of the 1918 pandemic, and my readers’ intuitive common sense tracks with Mr. Barry’s theory.  An initial first wave in March, April and May that is mild, followed by a devastating second and thirds waves in the fall that hammer the population.  The initial wave of the 1918 Spanish Flu was H1N1, with the second wave being H3N2.

From the Minneapolis Star Tribune:

John M. Barry: Deadly wave

In previous flu pandemics, an initial mild outbreak was followed by a deadlier spread.

NEW ORLEANS – As the swine flu threatens to become the next pandemic, the biggest questions are whether its transmission from human to human will be sustained and, if so, how virulent it might become. But even if this virus were to peter out soon, there is a strong possibility it would only go underground, quietly continuing to infect some people while becoming better adapted to humans, and then explode around the world.

What happens next is chiefly up to the virus. It is up to us to create a vaccine as quickly as possible.

Influenza viruses are unpredictable because they are able to mutate so rapidly. That capacity enables them to jump easily from species to species. An avian virus responsible for the 1918 pandemic jumped first from birds to humans, then from humans to swine (as well as other animals). Now, and not for the first time, pigs have given a virus back to humans.

Mutability makes even existing, well-known flu viruses unpredictable. After jumping to a new host, influenza can become more or less virulent — in fact, different offshoots could go in opposite directions — before a relatively stable new virus emerges.

Influenza pandemics have occurred as far back in history as we can look, but the four we know about in detail happened in 1889, 1918, 1957 and 1968. The mildest of these, the so-called Hong Kong flu in 1968, killed about 35,000 people in the United States and 700,000 worldwide. Ordinary seasonal influenza, in comparison, now kills 36,000 Americans a year, because the population has a higher proportion of elderly people and others with weak immune systems.

The worst influenza pandemic, in 1918, killed 675,000 in the United States. And although no one has a reliable worldwide death toll, the lowest reasonable number is about 35 million, and some scientists believe it killed as many as 100 million — at a time when the world’s population was only a quarter of what it is today. The dead included not only the elderly and infants but also robust young adults.

All four of the well-known pandemics seem to have come in waves. The 1918 virus surfaced by March and set in motion a spring and summer wave that hit some communities and skipped others. This first wave was extremely mild, more so even than ordinary influenza: Of the 10,313 sailors in the British Grand Fleet who became ill, for example, only four died. But autumn brought a second, more lethal wave, which was followed by a less severe third wave in early 1919.

The first wave in 1918 was relatively mild, many experts speculate, because the virus had not fully adapted to humans. There is very good evidence that people who were exposed during the first wave developed immunity — much as people get protection from a vaccine.

A similar kind of immune-building process is the most likely explanation for why, in 1918, only 2 percent of those who contracted the flu died. Having been exposed to other flu viruses, most people had built up some protection.

In all four instances, the gap between the time the virus was first recognized and a second, more dangerous wave swelled was about six months. It will take a minimum of four months to produce vaccine in any volume, possibly longer, and much longer than that to produce enough vaccine to protect most Americans. The race has begun.

  1. Thanks for this information DT. The granting of some immunity to the second wave from this weaker strain was something I had been thinking about. It will be interesting to see what the vaccine production levels look like.

GSK is also boosting production of Relenza. We have much better tools to fight flu now, but will there be enough, and has a flu been constructed that overcomes these measures? Will it make people grow feathers, or just be scary enough to induce heightened Pampers worship?

I wonder what the effects will be in the Moslem world, and how long it will take for the Jews to be blamed?

All these questions plus more will be answered in the next thrilling episode of: As the Flu Turns!

But seriously, sycophantic Pampers media leaches are referring to this as Barfy’s 9/11 moment when he will stand on the proverbial pile of rubble with his bullhorn. I agree with the unstupid who think this will more likely be his Katrina moment; golfing while people die.

  2. My loins have girded for so long now, I’m not sure I know where they are anymore! Can’t we just storm the Rockefeller mansion and steal the antidote?

  3. Kathy – keep it coming for the rest of the group…AND, I just ran across something that has nothing on the surface to do with the flu, but everything to do with Rumsfeld and Cheney – Imagine that…there are no coincidences. I will be putting it up very soon – as soon as the video downloads are finished and uploaded to eyeblast.

    Thanks for the links AGAIN!!!

  4. Hum. “Psychiatric side effects”.

    Also found it interesting that:

Tamiflu, Roche’s ninth-biggest selling drug, generated $257 million in the third quarter. Sales were down 62 percent from a year earlier.

yet somehow they used Kreskin-like techniques to predict 531% growth of the product last year?

Keep the links coming Kathy! Thanks!

  5. I am just worried that they are going to ram this anti-virals down our throats, so that is why I started to look into it.

My husband has several chronic conditions he is diabetic with chronic kidney disease as well as multiple eye conditions, all related to the diabetes. So if there is anything out there that might have an impact on his health I try to really know all I can about it.

He has to be very careful about what meds he takes due to his kidney condition. I am just afraid that if there is a real serious outbreak on this flu he may be worse off by the treatment than the actual flu. So I am a bit of a research junkie on all things medical.

I did post an article about vitamin D and how it could be helpful in the prevention of flu.

It is hard, as all of you know to sort what works and what is just hype and I can only imagine that all the snake oil salesman are going to becoming out selling their wares. If people panic they will be willing to try anything.

  6. I got a dose of Tamiflu last year after being exposed to the flu. The only side-effect I can report is increased aversion to Obama.

  7. This was sent to me; The sender says, “Please heed!”

    Swine Flu Hoax?

So who are the swine behind the swine flu? That’s what I wanted to know.

Whenever I begin to see blaring headlines regarding the word “pandemic”, I make a call to Dr. Lorraine Day, the former chief of Orthopedic Surgery at USF. Not one to mince words, and a dogged researcher, I can count on Lorraine to give me the big picture behind the headlines. I made that call yesterday. Her first words, underscored with a hearty laugh, were “It’s just another hoax!”

Here’s the long and short of it according to Lorraine. First, the government is continuing on it’s path to incite panic so we will ideally demand to have protection from these ‘killer virus’ via vaccinations. This would help avert a less popular mandatory vaccination program, which is what the Elite would like to see happen. Lorraine is also quick to point out that truly noxious vaccines are being developed in laboratories that combine human and animal virus’ that can seriously compromise our immune systems if we allow them to be administered to us.

Secondly, she said that the Center for Disease Control needed to move their stockpiles of the flu drug Tamiflu, which didn’t make it out to the masses during the last panic, which was the ‘bird flu’. I find it interesting that Tamiflu was supposedly created as the antidote to bird flu, but the CDC now says it actually works just fine for swine flu too. It would appear that the stuff is quite non-specific in nature for what is considered to be a very specific strain of flu. Hummm. Anyway, pharmacy chains such as CVC are now stocking up in preparation for the “pandemic”.

As an aside, it may not surprise you to know that former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is a major stockholder in Gilead Sciences, a California bio tech firm that owns the rights to Tamiflu. A CNN report from 2005, when we were were being threatened with the bird flu, put Rumsfeld’s holdings somewhere between $5,000,000 to $25,000,000. This is the same gentleman who brought us the excitotoxin Aspartame, now known to cause serious neurological problems in humans. But, less I digress…..

Lorraine went on to say that 12, 60, even 120 deaths from flu do not make a pandemic. More than 500,000 people a year die from various flu virus’. There are still active flu strains out there from all of the usual sources. In fact, it was just reported that 2 young people in the Sacramento area were tested to have been infected with the swine flu virus, but, no worries, they recovered from their flu in 24 hours. Sounds just like the flu that’s been going around through my friends and other acquaintances over the past few weeks in Sacramento.

To further the story, she said that Prince Charles recently pushed for the subject of Developmental Sustainability be pushed to the top of the G-20 agenda. Developmental Sustainability is the code word for de-population according to Dr. Day. As you may recall, Charles’ father, Prince Phillip, when asked what he would like to come back as if he had another life, said “A virus.” The idea was that he would then be able to kill off the useless members of society. What a gentleman. (He’ll love the new vaccines, which many say are engineered to de-populate!)

In short, Lorraine says do not worry. Just do your body a favor by eating a good clean diet full of fresh vegetables and fruits, get some sunshine and fresh air, turn to your spiritual practice, relax and, under no circumstances, allow yourself to be vaccinated. We’re all exposed to flu bugs, but if you can keep your immune system strong, you have nothing to worry about and the only swine involved here are those who are trying to keep us in fear.

There is ample evidence about Dr. Lorraine Day on the web. pjr

  8. Interesting article Diamond Tiger. Nice site. Thought I traveled light ! Found your site from Kathy. Like your art also.

    • Renee – thanks for stopping by again…sorry about the earlier mix up – you would not be surprised by who does fly-bys here. Yet – No black helicopters….hmmm…..
