[...] Obama and Axelrod know, unlike the media, that his victory was not due to a sweeping mandate. As has been reported, less voters than ever identify as liberals — his base. Moreover, the turnout increase this year was neglible, and Obama owes his victory to them multiple millions of Republican voters who inexplicably sat this one out. Had the GOP turned out this year like they did in 2004, Obama would have lost big, because he lost about 20% of Democrats. [...]

Diamond Tiger, this really pisses me off big time! We cross the aisle to work ourselves into a stupor to get a republican elected - for the first time in most of our lives. And what do the republicans do, for the first time in my memory? They sit home on their flat as*es and do nothing! Where was the supposedly invincible republican GOTV machine? I can't believe these people think electing a socialist is better than electing John McCain? Are they afraid of the GOP coming back to a more moderate stance? I just really, really don't get it. But I'm mad as hell that we're all going to have to pay for their stupidity.

At 3:00 p.m. when I voted, there was no line, no gaggle of workers offering campaign literature, nothing much happening in my largely Republican precinct. The Right Wing R was re-elected to the State House by more than 2 - 1, no surprise there. Turnout was near 80%. But as a PUMA, I announced my preference then withdrew from all party activities as a statement. My priority as a party activist has always been winning elections. I turned PUMA opposing the hijacking of our national party by left wing bullies. My county was no different. I have little doubt that this administration will be the D version of Bush. So pompous and spun are these avowedly liberal folk that the R's saw in this crowd what they themselves had been. For the first time, they felt what D's have known for eight years: this is no way to govern. Evangelical transposition of zeal to political work DOESN'T work. Nothing really works unless we all work together. Even Fox News, seeing themselves in the biased media coverage, cleaned up in that mirror. Some good things came of this. People of Color now have their preconcieved limitations debunked. Women have had their naievete about being qualified debunked. Some reflection and paradigm shifting is in order. I suggest we pretend we're watching an autumn leaf in its gentle back and forth lilting down the breeze of the closing days of 08. It most likely will hit a chinook, be whirled into a mutation of something better than either but not the best, yet, of the two extremes brought into balance.
